United Nations: raising awareness of the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners' children

22-11-2013 Family and children

(Minghui.org) On September 26th and 27th, the Committee on the Rights of the Child of the United Nations reviewed the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in China. Several organisations submitted reports detailing the human right violations with regard to Chinese children. The Chinese government signed the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1997. However, the rights of children in China have not been well protected. The problems include child labour, sexual harassment, and rape of children by government officials and schoolteachers and children being kidnapped.

A Falun Gong human rights organisation submitted a 42-page report to the committee, describing the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners' children in China. It documents Falun Gong children being kicked out of school; being taken into custody by the police; being jailed; being beaten in detention centres; being tortured to death by the police; and becoming orphans after their parents were tortured to death by the government.

The report noted that in 2000, the Chinese Department of Education made explicit a policy that Falun Gong practitioners' children cannot enter colleges.

The committee paid close attention to the report.

Niu Qingqing, daughter of Falun Gong practitioners

Niu Qingqing, whose parents are Falun Gong practitioners, came to the meeting with other practitioners. Since she was two, her parents have been arrested many times. She has only spent two years with her mother since then. Seeing her parents being beaten and arrested devastated her.

Kirsten Sandberg and Hatem Kotrane, the chairs of the committee, questioned the representatives of the Chinese government about the discrimination against Falun Gong children as well as Tibetan and Uighur children in China. The committee urged the Chinese government to implement the items in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
