Dr Li Chaoran was an obstetrician at Chinese Army General Hospital. In 2001, Dr Li visited a fellow practitioner and talked about wanting to go to Tiananmen Square to voice her feelings about the injustice of the persecution of Falun Gong that started in 1999. As a result, Dr Li, 68, was sentenced to four years in prison by the Military Court. She was jailed in ward nine in Beijing Women's Prison. Dr Li was made to sit straight on a small stool for many hours a day, and forced to watch government propaganda and write “reports on her thoughts”. She was also forced to pack chopsticks.

Dr Yu was twice imprisoned in Beijing Women's Prison. She was 34 years old when she was sentenced to three years in 2000, for calling for justice for Falun Gong. She was held in ward nine. She was once not allowed to sleep for six days and nights.

Dr Yu was sentenced to three years in prison again in 2005 for passing out Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party booklets to the public. She was held in ward eight. Ward chief Huang Qinghua took away Dr Yu's daily toiletries because Ms Yu refused to write a guarantee statement and a “confession”. Her rations were cut down to just a mouthful of rice and a few pieces of vegetables per meal, and she was not allowed to purchase toilet paper or change her clothes. She was denied toilet use and had soiled her trousers. Dr Yu developed a chronic sore on her bottom as a result. She was later transferred to the "Training Team" and tortured by the criminal inmates. She was made to sit on a small stool and not allowed to sleep. If she dozed off, cold water was poured on her and her thighs and buttocks were kicked. For a long time, Dr Yu was unable to keep her balance when standing, walking, and even sitting - she often tripped and fell and was extremely weak.

Dr Yu never yielded to the abuse and she never gave up her belief. She was released in 2007 and became homeless. Dr Dong died a few hours later. Her body had black and blue bruises all over, her legs were swollen, and the muscle and bone were separated on her right shoulder. An autopsy by Beijing Legal Medical Identification Centre determined that Dr Dong was beaten to death. The prison bribed and coerced her family to withdraw their lawsuit.
